The lighting used in films is also called cinematic lighting, used for bringing out the mood and atmosphere of a film scene. Film lighting can either be soft or harsh. It depends on what feels right for your film scene. Some factors that contribute to this include the scene itself, the camera’s characteristics, focal length, aperture, set design, and other aspects of production. Below are five of the most common film lighting techniques:

    1. Backlighting: This is one of the most commonly used lighting techniques in films, and involves placing the light behind the subject so that it casts shadows on their face. This can be done with natural light or artificial light. You might also see this referred to as rim lighting.

    2. Front Lighting: This is the opposite of backlighting, and involves placing a light in front of the subject so that it casts shadows on their face. This can be done with natural light or artificial light. You might also see this referred to as flat lighting.

    3. Side Lighting: This is another common technique that involves placing a light, for instance, our soft LED light panel, on one side of the subject so that it casts shadows on their face. This can be done with natural light or artificial light. You might also see this referred to as cross-lighting.

    4. Fill Lighting: This is a secondary light that you place next to your subject in order to fill in any shadows that are cast by the main light. This will help you achieve more even lighting across your entire scene.

    5. Key Lighting: The key light is the primary light source for your scene. It determines how many shadows your subject will create on the screen. Its strength, color, and angle are all factors in a cinematographer’s lighting design. For example, a high-key look means that the entire scene is lit by one light source (usually the sun) while a low-key look would expose all colors in shadows during daylight hours by using a combination of multiple lights behind your subject.
