Mainstream Types of Film Lighting

Since the 1970s, with the rapid development of film and television technology, lighting lamps used to create light and shadow are constantly updated and iterated. In this short period of decades, scientists have been trying their best to create new light sources. After the test of time, the lighting fixtures we can see in all kinds of film sets and film crews are nothing but the following: tungsten filament lamp, hydrargyrum medium-arc iodide lamp, fluorescent lamp and LED lamp.

Film Light: Tungsten Filament Lamp

The first is the tungsten filament lamp, first-used in the film industry. Tungsten filament lamp belongs to a kind of incandescent lamp. It is famous for heating the tungsten filament inside the bulb to generate heat radiation source. Tungsten filament lamp has the advantages of small volume, high brightness, high color rendering, stable color temperature, no flicker, low price and so on. It is an effective tool for making warm light source in movies.

Film Light: Hydrargyrum Medium-arc Iodide Lamp

Hydrargyrum Medium-arc Iodide Lamp, also known as HMI, is the most common type in the current formal film shooting process. Hydrargyrum Medium-arc Iodide Lamp is lit by inert gas and metal halide in the lamp tube, which has the advantages of high color rendering, high brightness, solid structure, and complete spectrum. In general, electronic ballast is usually required to ensure the constant relationship between current and voltage.

Film Light: Fluorescent Lamp

In addition to tungsten lamp and hydrargyrum medium-arc iodide lamp, in the field of film and television photography we may also use fluorescent lamp. Fluorescent lamp is cold-light lamp on the basis of transforming solar lamp in the earliest. Its characteristic is that it can combine with many lamps, volume is frivolous, luminous area is big, does not have frequency flash, does not give out heat basically, the light diverges and is downy. It is ideal soft light source.

Film Light: LED Soft Panel

LED is short for light emitting diodes. In the early days, LED lights could only emit a single color, such as red and green. After scientists figured out how to make LED emit blue Light, white LED lights came into being. Led lights have moved in the direction of increasing brightness.

In the field of film and television lighting, LED is a relatively new type of light, which is small and light, easy to start, easy to operate, and has low fever, high luminous efficiency, competitive price. After the LED light panel manufacturer solved the problem of color rendering index, LED lights experienced upright type, patch type and COB integrated lamp bead. In recent years, COB LED lights have almost taken over from tungsten lights by storm.
